What does Marketplicity mean? I am asked this all the time. Don’t be shy: you can ask too.
I first arrived at the name Marketplicity when I was taking design classes in the evening and painting during the day to make ends meet. If you have painted before, you know that there is a lot of time to think while working. At the time, I was freelancing under the moniker of Marathon Inc (I have always been fascinated with marathons…).
While painting, I liked to ponder various marketing and branding solutions for companies. I have close ties to the opera company in Cleveland, and I thought of a sticky, grassroots way to spread some excitement to their target audience. Cleveland has a lot of great young opera talent who are willing to do what it takes to get work and make connections. The Cleveland public (or for that matter, most any other city in the US) at large doesn’t know much about their local opera company. My idea to build awareness for Cleveland Opera was to utilize the young singers in town in performing different “publicity stunts” downtown. My favorite “stunt” was to have the singers perform the duties of an elevator operator for the major high-rises downtown. The singers would dress in full costume and sing selections from the upcoming production. If that wouldn’t get people talking, I don’t know what would! I think they should still do it.
While concocting my little publicity stunt I stumbled upon and defined my business’ name:
Marketplicity: When all of an organization’s marketing efforts combine to create something cohesive and, more importantly, remarkable
